Liaoning University (LNU) originated from the Northeast Business College established by the Northeast People’s Government in November of 1948. It was the first specialized business college founded by the Communist Party of China. In 1953 the Northeast Business College merged into the Northeast College of Finance and Economics. In 1958 LNU came into fruition through the merging of three schools: the Northeast School of Finance and Economics, various departments of Shenyang Normal College, and the School of Shenyang Russian Language. The Sports Faculty Department has developed with the merged Physical Education Group of the three schools, and is an independent teaching unit of LNU. It consists of one office, three teaching and research sections and one center. Now there are 50 teachers and staff, among which there are 45 full-time teachers including three professors and 14 associate professors, and five staff members.
Over the years, constantly insisting on the fundamental mission of fostering virtue, The Sports Faculty Department has been committed to the development ideas of taking project construction as the foundation, curriculum construction as the center, cadre construction as the focus, sunshine sports as the carrier, sports competitions as the window, team building as the starting point, and system construction as the guarantee. And it has been integrally pushing forward the coordinated development of various tasks of the Department, including party building, personnel training, faculty development, curriculum construction, sunshine sports, high-level sports team construction and service guarantee, and has been striving to achieve the objective of school physical education that comprehensively improves the physical and mental health of college students.
LNU has an excellent sports tradition and a solid sports foundation. Over the years, under the correct leadership of the Party Committee of the university, and through the joint efforts and hard work of several generations of staff in the Sports Faculty Department, the physical education work of our university has made remarkable achievements. In 1986, the Men’s Basketball Team of our school was the champion of the Basketball Tournament at the 2nd National University Games; in October 1987, Liaoning University was identified by the State Education Commission as one of the first 53 pilot institutions for high-level sports teams in the country; in 1992, the university was rated as an excellent school for physical education curriculum evaluation in national colleges and universities by the State Education Commission; in 1993, the university was awarded as an advanced school for after-school training pilot program in national colleges and universities by the Chinese College Students’ Sports Association; in 1996, the Men’s Basketball Team won the runner-up of the Basketball Tournament at the 5th National University Games; in 2007, it was awarded as the runner-up of the Men’s Basketball Team of China University Basketball Super League (CUBS); in 2021, the rowing team of Liaoning University won the second place in the Men’s Eights (8+) and the third place in the Women’s Quadruple Sculls (4+) in the 4th International Open Rowing Regatta; in 2022, the Men’s Football Team of Liaoning University won the fourth place in the First China University Beach Soccer Championship; in 2023, Liaoning University won the first place in Northeast Region and the third place in the National Finals of the Cheerleading Championships of the 25th China University Basketball Grade One League.
The Sports Faculty Department will always bear in mind the original mission of cultivating talent for the Party and the Stat adhere to the fundamental task of fostering virtue, and forge ahead in order to promote the development of school physical education, better facilitate the physical fitness of all teachers and students, and pass on the sports spirit from generation to generation.
