School of Life Sciences was founded in 1958 with a long history, which is one of the earliest established departments in Liaoning University and was called "Department of Biology" earlier. The name was changed to "School of Life Science" in 2006 and two undergraduate courses Biological Science and Biotechnology kept currently after several national policy adjustments.
The School obtained Biology primary discipline master degree authorization in 2010. Now 7 Master's degree programs including Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Zoology, Botany, Cell Biology, Food Science, Biological Health Statistics and a doctoral program which is Biological Health Statistics and enrolls about 95 undergraduate students, 40 master students and 2 doctoral student each year.
The School have 9 undergraduate sciences labs, 13 professional science labs, 1 nature museum, 2 Provincial Key Laboratories ( Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of animal resources and disease prevention and Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of pharmaceutical molecular simulation and design) and 1 provincial and municipal engineering and Technology Research Center (Computational simulation and information processing of biological macromolecules). The School has 47 faculties, including 10 professors, 15 associated professors. 97% of teachers have a doctorate and 60% of teachers have the experience of studying abroad.
Research areas are mainly focus on the following aspects:
(1) Molecular mechanisms of diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and the development of new drugs.
(2) Explore the biological antimicrobial peptides from animals and analyze their structure, function, relationship with the disease.
(3) Computational simulation and information processing of biological macromolecules.
(4) Transgenic plants, physiology and biochemistry reaction in stress condition and its epigenetic mechanism.
(5) Ecology and conservation biology of birds.
(6) Biological resources investigation, estimation and environmental impact assessment.
(7) The function of natural biological active substances and its application in the preservation of green biological food and food safety evaluation.
