On the afternoon of April 28th, School of Physics invited Dr. Cai Ronggen, the academician from the Institute for Theoretical Physics of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) to give a report named “General Relativity, Black Hole and the Gravitational Wave”.
Academician Cai gave an introduction to the theoretical background, development history, rationale, significance and the important three verifications of Relativity. The general theory of Relativity not only deduces that some massive stars will end up turning into black holes, but also predicted the existence of the gravitational wave, which has been verified through direct observation. The general theory of Relativity is also the theoretical basis of modern cosmology and the expanding universe model, and is widely applied in astrophysics. The report also introduced black hole and its relationship with space-time distortions, as well as the detection of gravitational waves. The profound knowledge and the explanation of Dr. Cai greatly inspired the students’ interest in exploring the mystery of physics.
