Significant Achievement in ‘Double First-Class’ Construction: LNU Has a Quarter of the World’s Top 2% Most Influential Economists

In October, 2023, Stanford University updated its list of the ‘World’s Top 2% Scientists’. Prof. YU Miaojie and Prof. YAO Shujie have been listed in the ‘2022 Scientific Influence List’. Also, Prof. YAO Shujie has been listed in the ‘Career-Long Impact List’ for a second time.

‘World’s Top 2% Scientists’ selects the top 2% of most-cited scientists in various disciplines from approximately seven million scientists worldwide. The list includes separate data for ‘career-long impact’ and a ‘2022 Scientific Influence List’. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. 191 top scholars in applied economics worldwide have been selected in the list.

Apart from Prof. YU Miaojie and Prof. YAO Shujie, 7 top scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University are also on the list. A quarter of the ‘World’s Top 2% of Most Influential Economists’ are from Liaoning University. It demonstrates the international academic influence and strong scientific research capability of the university’s scholars and talents.

Prof. YU Miaojie was born in Raoping, Guang Dong province. He holds his Ph.D. in Economics from University of California, Davis. He is an NPC Deputy and a member of the 14th Standing Committee of the Liaoning Provincial People’s Congress. He currently serves as the Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of Liaoning University, Chairman of the University Academic Committee and Academic Degree Committee.

He is the first winner of Royal Economic Society Prize from mainland China, selected as a Distinguished Professor of the National Talent Project, one of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, an Exceptional Young Scientist in Beijing, Distinguished Professor of Boya Project at Peking University, Chief Expert of the Major Projects of National Social Science Foundation, and an outstanding scholar of NG Teng Fong/ Sino Scholarship. He is ranked one of the top 1% most cited economists in the global economics and management category.

He also serves as the Deputy Director of the China Society of World Economics, Deputy Director of Chinese Association of Quantitative Economics, Deputy Director of China Society of Industrial Economics, Vice Chairman of Chinese Association of Hong Kong & Macao Studies, secretary-general of International Consortium for China Studies, a member of the Economic and Trade Policy Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Commerce, a member of “China and US Research Think Tank Alliance” of the Ministry of Finance, and Vice President of Liaoning Federation of Social Sciences.

Prof. YU Miaojie’s research field focuses on international trade, world economy and China’s economic development. He was specially invited to the United Nations Headquarters to deliver reports on China’s economic development. On the 120th anniversary of Peking University, as a representative of outstanding young and middle-aged teachers, he was specially received by President Xi Jinping. On three occasions he  participated in high-level symposiums hosted by Premier Li Keqiang. A paper by Prof. YU Miaojie was recognized as one of the three most influential papers on Chinese economic studies published by the leading  international journal, Economic Journal, since its establishment in 1891. His co-authored paper won one of the most influential papers on Chinese economic studies by top international economic journal, Review of Economic & Statistics. He has respectively won the Wu Yuzhang Prize Humanities and Social Sciences Research Award, the Zhang Peigang Development Economics Award, and the Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award. Moreover, he has won the Anzijie International Trade Research Award five times. His publication ‘Processing Trade, Tariff Reductions, and Firm Productivity’ won the Liu Shibai Economic Award, the Hu Sheng Youth Academic Award and the China Young Economist Award.

 

Prof. YU Miaojie’s lectures on ‘The Dual Cycle of China’s Economy in the New Development Stage’ and ‘High-Quality Development of China’s Economy’ have been selected twice as  outstanding lectures of national cadre education and training by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. He was specially invited twice by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision of the People’s Republic of China to deliver live broadcasts on China’s economic development. His book China-US Trade War and Trade Talk won the China New Development Award of the Springer Press and has been translated and published in German.

 

Prof. YAO Shujie


 

 

     

        Prof. Yao Shujie is currently the Dean of Li Anmin Economic Research Institute of Liaoning University, Vice Chairman of the University Academic Committee, distinguished professor of National Talent Program, distinguished professor of Chongqing University, and an outstanding scientist of Chongqing. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK, and did post-doctoral research at Oxford University.

        He has published nearly 200 papers in dozens of well-known academic journals such as Journal of Political Economy and Economic Research. He has also published 19 monographs. He serves as the Editor of several CSSCI/SSCI journals, and the Editor-in Chief of Digital Economy and Sustainable Development. His papers have been cited over 11,000 times by Google Scholars and CNKI. He has been awarded the Elsevier Global Highly Cited Scholar from 2020 to 2022. He is ranked 261st among the 1000 outstanding scientists in Economics and Finance of modern times in the UK. He has been listed in the ‘Career-Long Impact List’ of World’s Top 2% of Most Influential Economists. He presided over one major project of the National Social Science Foundation of China. He also won the Zhang Peigang Outstanding Achievement Award in Development Economics, and the Anzijie International Trade Outstanding Article Award.
