As December 16 2023 marked the 30th anniversary of the cooperation between Russian Irkutsk State University and Liaoning University, a delegation of Liaoning University led by Vice President Shi Baodong visited Russia to participate in commemorative activities between the two universities. The commemorative meeting was joined by delegation members from LNU and Li Hai, Consul General of the Consulate General of People's Republic of China (PRC) in Irkutsk, Edelman, Deputy Mayor of Irkutsk and Chairman of the Social, Political and Cultural Committee, Abanovich, Deputy Minister of Education of Irkutsk, Ba Sulova, Second Secretary of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in Irkutsk, Schmidt, President of Irkutsk State University, Constantine, Vice President of Irkutsk State University and representatives of teachers and students of the two universities.

As part of the activities, President Schmidt awarded honorary professor certificates of Irkutsk State University to four professors, namely, Yu Miaojie Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of Liaoning University, Li Shuyun Vice President of Liaoning University, Huo Chunhui, Vice President of Liaoning University and Yao Shujie, President of China Open Economy Research Institute. This shows the high regard of Irkutsk National University given to LNU’s contribution in teaching and scientific research as well as the partnership between the two universities, It will pave the way to further ties in teaching, scientific research and talent training so as to make common progress in the educational field for the two universities.

Founded on October 27, 1918, and being the first institution of higher learning in Siberia, Irkutsk State University enjoys the longest history in East Siberia and the Far East Pacific. Directly under the Ministry of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the university ranks as one of the top 10 universities in Russia and serves as a member of the International University Federation. The university now enrolls more than 30,000 students and employs 1200 teachers, including 550 professors with a doctoral degree, 350 PhD researchers, seven academicians in the Russian Academy of Sciences, nine members in the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 40 experts in different fields in the Russian Academy of Sciences and 19 meritorious scientists in the Russian Academy of Sciences. Irkutsk State University is also in the forefront among the Russian Federation's institutions of higher learning in terms of international joint education and international exchanges and cooperation. It has been 30 years since Irkutsk State University signed an inter-institutional agreement with Liaoning University in 1993.
