On the afternoon of January 17, Professor Yu Miaojie, President of Liaoning University (LNU), led a recruitment team composed of faculty representatives from the Division of Economics, China Economic Research Institute, Li Anmin Institute of Economic Research, and other units to conduct overseas talent recruitment in economics at the Puhe Campus.

During the interviews, the recruitment team interviewed three candidates, whose doctoral studies/graduating institutions were Yale University, European University Institute, and Singapore Management University, respectively. The candidates each delivered an online presentation on their research. The interview panel included not only several on-campus experts such as Dong Baomin, Deputy Director of the Division of Economics; He Chao, Deputy Dean of the China Economic Research Institute; Yin Lijuan from the School of Finance and Trade; and Yang Guohao from the Li Anmin Institute of Economic Research, but also invited experts including Xu Mingzhi from Peking University, Tan Yong from Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, and Lu Bing from Beijing Normal University. Also attending the interviews as observers were Qiu Ying from the School of International Economics and International Relations; Yan Ping, Zhou Yu, Xiong Zeyuan, and Xie Cong from the China Economic Research Institute; Zhao Zilong from the China Open Economy Research Institute; and Zhan Qilin and Yu Chaoyi from the School of Finance and Trade.

During the interviews, Yu Miaojie listened attentively to the candidates’ presentations and held cordial exchanges with the review experts. He emphasized that high-level talent is the core driving force behind the university’s development. He noted that the University must uphold rigorous standards and strict requirements, and, in line with the principles of openness, fairness, and impartiality, select truly outstanding candidates who align with the university’s development goals and can lead disciplinary advancement. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the invited experts for taking time out of their schedules to participate and offer strong support, and voiced the hope of further strengthening inter-university academic cooperation and exchange in the future.

LNU has always placed high importance on attracting talent from home and abroad, focusing on the needs of its “Double First-Class” initiative. In this round of overseas economics talent recruitment, LNU has received 182 job applications from economics PhD graduates of prestigious institutions including Yale University, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics and Political Science, Columbia University, New York University, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Duke University, Pennsylvania State University, Tilburg University, National University of Singapore, Australian National University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Hong Kong, and Peking University. Compared with the 123 applications received the previous year, this represents an increase of nearly 50%, demonstrating the university’s growing academic reputation in economics and its increasing attractiveness to talent.

The recruitment team promoted LNU from various aspects, including its basic profile, talent policies, disciplinary strengths, and platform development. They conducted comprehensive screening and interviews of applicants, evaluating them from multiple perspectives such as overall quality, research level, and development potential. The recruitment covered a wide range of fields, including macroeconomics, microeconomic theory, international trade, micro empirical research, econometrics, urban economics, and agricultural economics, among others. Following the preliminary selection and the first round of online and offline screening, the team selected 26 candidates for a second-round interview, conducted from January 16 to 19. In other interview sessions, on-campus experts participating in the evaluation included Russell Cooper, Ma Xiangjun, Yan Ping, Gao Ming, Tian Jianrong, Wang Xiaowen, Yang Zhe, Chen Feng, Wang Zhifeng, He Zhenyu, Zhang Anzhou, Wang Dandan, Yang Cheng, and Mao Minghai; external experts included Li Jie, Li Jianpei, Zheng Jie, Yin Zhendong, Wu Zenan, Zhu Shenghao, Xu Zhiwei, Yu Changhua, Zhang Ji, Sun Yutao, Chen Mingli, Chen Ye, Xue Sen, Ma Sen, Tang Qu, Liu Sibo, Zhu Hongjia, Liang Wenquan, and Lin Faqin.

It is worth noting that among the overseas economics talents recruited in the previous year, there were both senior scholars who have published papers in top-tier economics journals such as Review of Economic Studies, The Economic Journal, and Journal of Economic Theory, as well as young talents who, within less than a year of joining LNU, published high-level papers in leading journals in development economics, such as the Journal of Development Economics.

Looking ahead, LNU will continue to advance its talent-driven development strategy, further enhancing its ability to attract, support, and retain outstanding scholars from around the world. Guided by a global vision, the university will build a high-caliber faculty as a key pillar for Double First-Class development, empowering high-quality growth and contributing to the continued momentum of the “talents flocking to Liaoning and Shenyang” initiative.
