Professor Yao Shujie is the Dean and Senior Professor of Li Anmin Economic Research Institute of Liaoning University and the Vice Chairman of the 10th Academic Committee of Liaoning University (since 2023). He is also the Secretary General of the Research Center for Urbanization and Regional Innovation Pole Development and Distinguished Professor of the National Talent Program of the Ministry of Education. He graduated from Hainan University with a bachelor’s degree and obtained a master’s degree and a doctor’s degree in Economics from the University of Manchester, UK and is a postdoctoral researcher from Oxford University.
In 2014, Professor Yao Shujie returned to China and served as the full-time Deputy Director of the Department of Social Sciences at Chongqing University as well as a national level distinguished professor. He formerly served as the founding dean and professor of the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute at the University of Nottingham, UK. He was also an economic advisor to international organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations. He has worked and studied in over 20 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. From 1997 to 1998, Professor Yao Shujie served as the President of the China Economic Society in the UK and in 2012 worked as a Senior Advisor to China's Soft Science. In 2021, he served as the Chairman of the Chongqing Higher Education Economics Undergraduate Education Guidance Committee and he was awarded the title of Chongqing Talent Outstanding Scientist in the same year.
Professor Yao Shujie has published over 200 papers in dozens of well-known academic journals such as the Journal of Political Economy and Economic Research (14 papers) at home and abroad, including SSCI/CSSCI. He has published 19 Chinese and English monographs and edited works by renowned publishing companies both domestically and internationally. Over 100 articles have also been published in mainstream domestic and foreign media such as Financial Times, People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, Reference News, and People’s Forum. As a special commentator on China Central Television International Broadcasting Channel (CGTN Radio), he has had multiple discussions with former national leaders such as Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Wang Qishan, and Liu Yandong. Professor Yao Shujie served as an editorial board member for multiple SSCI/CSSCI journals such as Economic Research, and as Chief Editor of Digital Economy and Sustainable Development.
Professor Yao Shujie’s works and papers have been cited 7906 times on Google Scholars, with 45 H-index papers (28 in the past five years) and 92 i10-index papers. There have been two highly cited papers in the past three years. Chinese CNKI citations number 4475, with a maximum of 810 citations per article. He has been recognized as a highly cited scholar in global applied economics by Elsevier in 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as a lifetime and annual ranking in the top 2% of the world's scientists in 2022 and 2023. Among the thousands of outstanding scientists in the field of economic and financial management in modern times in the UK (ranked 261), Professor Yao Shujie ranks after Professor James Mirrlees, who has won a Nobel laureate in Economics.
After returning to work in China, Professor Yao Shujie led a major project of the National Social Science Foundation (one-time completion), a general project of the National Natural Science Foundation (post evaluation special excellence), a key research project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and more than 10 other provincial and ministerial level research projects. He received the 9th Zhang Peigang Development Economics Excellent Paper Award and An Zijie International Trade Excellent Article Award. He also has multiple first, second, third, and excellent article prizes as well as excellent scientific research achievements at national and provincial level. Additionally, he received the Chongqing Daily’s Top 10 Excellent Theoretical Article Award in 2020 and 2021. Professor Yao Shujie has had more than ten senior government reports approved and adopted by national and provincial leaders; moreover, some relevant suggestions on infrastructure construction in modern transportation as well as on rural revitalization have been embodied in Chongqing’s 14th Five Year Plan. Also, his Chinese articles have been reprinted in full 17 times by the National People’s Congress of China.
